Histamine and SIBO go hand in hand! Usually total Histamine and SIBO go hand in hand! Usually total histamine avoidance is not necessary. I wanted to provide my basic thoughts on histamine issues. Hope it helps #sibo #ibs #guthealth
Many of my clients on restrictive gut diets have p Many of my clients on restrictive gut diets have pretty significant blood sugar swings. Most of the time there a number of reasons for this—most common being undereating, imbalanced meals and chronic stress

If your energy, mood and cognitive function feels totally unstable before and after meals, you probably should work on blood sugar balance. Not having balanced blood sugar is going to prevent gut repair

High blood sugar is damaging to nerves in the gut and slow motility. Low blood sugar can also disrupt digestion in a number of ways. Often I see my clients swinging from up and down throughout the day which is very stressful for the gut

I personally had horrendous blood sugar swings during my gut journey that were preventing progress. I really improved when I Took steps to balance my blood sugar

For most of my clients, honing in on macro and micro nutrition is key to balancing blood sugar. Have you struggled with blood glucose issues? I hat strategies have helped? #sibo #guthealth #ibs #microbiome #sibodiet #lowfodmap

Digestion is a north to south process! If you have Digestion is a north to south process! If you have issues up north, you will have issues down south

I find it is very easy to get hyper focused on issues down south in the intestines that you fail to see issues with digestive processes happening in the brain, mouth and stomach

Take time to smell your food. Make your food look delish. Take your time tasting the food. Chew it throughly. This will all help digestion down stream

Stomach support is often needed as well to help set the correct pH in the gut that will stimulate bile flow and enzyme release in the small intestines

Basically, the key take away from this post is to not get hyper focused on your microbial imbalances down stream if you have not yet fixed breakdowns upstream

Tell me how you support your digestion up north! Please leave a comment below

Issues with gall bladder specifically bile flow ca Issues with gall bladder specifically bile flow can be a HUGE reason why you may be struggling to repair your gut and microbiome

The gall bladder is responsible for storing and releasing bile into the small intestines. Bile is most known for its role in fat digestion but it does so much more than that

Bile is an antimicrobial, it helps to control bacterial populations in the small intestines. Bile is also helpful at stimulating motility. Both the antimicrobial and motility effects of bile make it a key anti-SIBO defense mechanism

Lack of movement, nutrient deficiencies, liver congestion, low calorie and low fat diets can all lead to sludgy/poor bile flow. It is important to understand that fixing any bile flow issues is so key to beating SIBO

What do gall bladder issues look like? High levels of fat in your stools and an inability to tolerate fats cab be a good indicator of gall bladder issues. High bilirubin and steatocrit can also be good labs to keep an eye on

Working with a provider to help with gall bladder issues may be super beneficial if you have these indicators! #sibo #ibs #guthealth #microbiome
Some of the popular SIBO strategies seem to help a Some of the popular SIBO strategies seem to help at first. But often the longer and more you do strict diets and antibiotics, the less effective they are

Not only don’t they work long term, but they can also create more gut issues over time. One newer area of study that I believe comes into play is small intestinal dysbiosis

I often hear people saying that your small intestines should be sterile and this is totally false! Your small intestines should have a diverse and balanced microbiome. It has a lot less bacteria but there is an optimal microbiome you want in your small intestines

Small intestinal dysbiosis is an imbalance of bacteria in the small intestines. The more you clear out and starve your small intestines the higher chance you are at developing this

I believe this is why so many people have great results with their first round of clearing and less desirable results with consecutive clearing protocols

Low fiber diets have been associated with small intestinal dysbiosis. So restricting fiber long term is not a great strategy here either

These issues are why it is so important to figure out your root causes and not settle for long term restrictive diets and cyclical antimicrobial treatment. You could be creating more dysfunction when these strategies are used long term

Gut repair is all about “the aggregation of marg Gut repair is all about “the aggregation of marginal gains” which is a fancy way of saying that small lifestyle changes can accumulate to big results

Habits are not as sexy as the latest supplement or the diet craze BUT they are tried and true. When the right habits are created over a consistent period of time, you will see positive change

When you are searching for the one “IT” factor thing that will conquer your SIBO, it is to neglect key lifestyle tweaks. I know I got sucked into the restrictive diets and searching for magic bullets during my SIBO journey. My quick fix mentality got me into trouble more than a few times

Gut healing takes time and commitment to habits such as sleep, self care, movement and others. Correcting potentially lifelong deficiencies in these areas may take time to see effects. Meditating for 1 week is great but it probably won’t yield life changing results that meditating for 6 months might have

This post is just a reminder to try to avoid getting overly focused on the finish line and not the process and steps required to get there. Focusing on what you can do each day to foster a healthy gut long term will yield results

And don’t get discouraged if you are not perfect with habits! Try to focus on progress and not perfection

What habits are you incorporating today to help your gut? #sibo #guthealth #ibs #microbiome
Hydrogen sulfide Microbes have been an especially Hydrogen sulfide Microbes have been an especially hot topic since the new SIBO breath test came out that measures all 3 gases

But, what I don’t see being discussed is that many of the dietary interventions for SIBO could lead to a hydrogen sulfide overgrowth. Hydrogen sulfide producers tend to thrive in high protein/high fat and low fiber diets—which is usually the typical diet I see many SIBO sufferers following

By trying to starve the gut of fiber, you could just be creating a deeper problem with hydrogen sulfide. In fact, the low FODMAP diet has been shown to increase bilophila wadsworthia a hydrogen sulfide producer that has been shown to increase inflammation at the gut lining. Low FODMAP also lowers good microbes which leaves room for B. Wadsworthia to grow as well as other hydrogen sulfide producers

This is just another reminder that starving the microbiome is not a sustainable option. I am highly suspicious that many low fermentable fiber diets lead to hydrogen sulfide issues over time from what I have observed with clients
