Getting your fiber in is imperative for preventing Getting your fiber in is imperative for preventing constipation. If it is consistently low—it will drive constipation and can keep you stuck.

And so many of my clients are scared of fiber or may struggle symptomatically with fiber—that doesn’t mean you should give up on fiber. Instead, you need to try to find ways to increase tolerance to fiber. This is something I do all the time with my clients.

Fiber is your friend especially if constipated!! Find ways to make it work for you and your motility!

Hello! It’s me, Amy—your friendly, neighborhoo Hello! It’s me, Amy—your friendly, neighborhood gut health RD! This June marks 5 years helping my clients find solutions to their IBS and SIBO. I want to share my top 3 pieces of advice for those struggling with gut issues.

1. Focus on nourishing and not restricting. Popular gut health diets backfire—they create more issues than they solve. Plus, they take up so much time and energy that could be used on other more effective strategies. Just avoid wasting your time restricting more than you need to.

2. Leverage your lifestyle—sleep, movement and stress management is imperative to optimal gut function. Cutting corners in these areas will keep you stuck

3. Avoid over killing your microbiome. Round after round of clearing protocols can lead to more dysbiosis. Use killing wisely. Many people never respond to clearing and do much better with rebuilding strategies. The microbiome is complex—we need to respect the nuance

Those are the biggies! I hope you like my new headshot from @rebeccacarmelphotography!

Please leave any other helpful tips that you have learned on your gut journey below.

SIBO Breath Tests are used so often in the gut hea SIBO Breath Tests are used so often in the gut health space, but they are wildly inaccurate. In the latest podcast episode, we discuss that false positive rates for the lactulose breath test could be close to 90%! This is why I do not use breath testing in my practice.

Now this can be super frustrating. In reality, the popularity of the breath test has led to an over diagnosis of SIBO in my opinion.

The longer I have worked in the gut health space--the more labels like IBS and SIBO really don't matter that much (they don't guide the strategies that I use the my clients). What matters is exploring what is driving their gut dysfunction.

What is effecting their motility, digestive capacity, immune function and microbiome broadly that is preventing progress? This is the most important question I want to answer.

Living and dying by your breath test result can just keep you stuck. It doesn't help answer the above question and the results may be more indicative of transit time vs bacterial abundance anyway. The test really can't be trusted.

If you are interested in learning more--please check out the latest episode of the IBS Freedom podcast--where we have an in depth conversation about the problems with the breath test.

HCL can be fantastic for low stomach acid but you HCL can be fantastic for low stomach acid but you don’t need to rely on this forever (unless you really want to). There is a reason your acidity is low.

If HCL helps you—that’s great! But, try to understand why? What is causing your levels to be too low??

Please leave your Qs about stomach acid below!

I made the worst decisions when I was desperate in I made the worst decisions when I was desperate in my gut journey. The simple truth is there is no magic bullet.

Gut repair takes time! Trying to rush can actually lead you to cut corners that are imperative for success. Rushing almost always leads to a negative mindset too

Recovery of your gut health is possible and you can achieve it. But try not to put it on a timeline. Try to focus on consistent habits each day for the best results long term. Shift focus to a long term mindset (what will help me feel better in 6 months) vs a short term mindset (what will help me feel better right now)

The typical SIBO paradigm overuses killing measure The typical SIBO paradigm overuses killing measures! I work with many people who have actually dug themselves into a much bigger hole doing round after round of antimicrobial treatment (even herbs--these are problematic too)

After years of working with SIBO clients, I believe that majority of my clients struggle more with dysbiosis (imbalance) driving their symptoms vs an overabundance of bacteria (too many bugs). Newer research that analyzes the small intestinal microbiome also supports this idea.

For many people, antimicrobials don't work. If dysbiosis is the primary problem--doing cyclical round of antimicrobials can make dysbiosis worse.

And this post isn't meant to poo poo antimicrobials all together because used appropriately and for the right amount of time they can be helpful for some people. But, I have repeatedly seen practitioners having clients on kill protocols for 4,5,6 and sometimes even 12 months at a time---this is where the collateral damage to the microbiome happens.

Plus, you may think you HAVE to do anti-microbials even if they have not been helpful for you. If you have done a round or two of clearing and it did not benefit you, I would move on to other strategies. Many people are not responders to antimicrobials but they keep trying because they think they just haven't cleared enough.

What has your experience been like with antimicrobials? Also be sure to check out our latest IBS Freedom Podcast episode where we dive into this topic in thorough detail!
